Earby Mines Research Group was formed as an offshoot of Earby Pothole Club and set out to explore, record, and if possible preserve mining sites and equipment in the Yorkshire Dales. Members of the group over the years accumulated a considerable amount of material relating to lead mines in the Yorkshire Dales and the Robert Windle Foundation Trustees kindly offered the use of the building as a museum at a peppercorn rent, after almost a year's preparation the museum opened on 22nd May 1971. In 1997 the Earby Mines Research Group Museum Trust was formed in order to raise money for very necessary repairs to the building and re-displaying the collection. Following closure of the museum in 2000 for total refurbishment, almost £400,000 has been raised by the efforts of Trustees and local people. Earby Mines Research Group members and helpers have restored the unique collection of tools, photographs and memorabilia illustrating the mining, dressing and smelting of lead ore.
