The Museum was opened to house the relics of mining collected over twenty or more years, through collection and donation ranging from horse waggons to miners' personal belongings.

Storyboards simply explain the various processes involved in the mining and treatment of lead ores and are accompanied by a whole range of old and new photographs taken underground and on surface in the Yorkshire Dales.  Two large displays depict conditions underground.

Although the museum is mainly concerned with lead mining, other workings for coal, chert, copper and stone slates have not been forgotten.

There is a tearoom for the sale of light refreshments.
